Marlins Set Roster as Opening Day 2017 Takes Place Monday at Washington

The Miami Marlins unveiled their 25-man roster Sunday ahead of Opening Day.

Miami was opted to go with 13 pitchers and 12 hitters, as had been expected all spring long. The extra arm in the pen means manager Don Mattingly will work with a smaller bench than many other teams. The luxury of the extra reliever should be an asset for Miami's pitching strategy and could outweigh the negatives of a lighter bench.

The pitching staff for the Marlins includes Kyle Barraclough, Wei-Yin Chen, Adam Conley, Tom Koehler, Dustin McGowan, David Phelps, A.J Ramos, Daniel Straily, Junichi Tazawa, Jose Ureña, Edinson Volquez, Nick Wittgren and Brad Ziegler. 8 of the 13 pitchers have the ability to start games and Miami figures to piggyback starters often this season.

Volquez will get the start Monday against the Nationals, who will send Stephen Strasburg to the mound.

Miami's 12 position players will be A.J. Ellis, J.T. Realmuto, Justin Bour, Derek Dietrich, Dee Gordon, Miguel Rojas, Tyler Moore, Adeiny Hechavarria, Marcell Ozuna, Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and Ichiro Suzuki.

With Martin Prado opening the season on the disabled list, Miami should have at-bats available for Dietrich or Rojas every game. Moore who made the team as a non-roster invitee, will likely also see some increased chances to pinch-hit.

In addition to Prado, the Marlins placed Jeff Locke on the disabled list. Locke could miss all of April, but should be a big part of Miami's pitching staff when he returns. Barring setbacks, Prado could be ready for games by mid-April. Both players had their DL stints set retroactively to March 30th.
