Marlins Sign Cameron Maybin

The Marlins agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Cameron Maybin on Wednesday

The Miami Marlins signed outfielder Cameron Maybin to a one-year contract on Wednesday.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced by the team, but it is likely to be a relatively low salary. Maybin played for the Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros in 2017, with some struggles in the second half. Despite those struggles, Maybin was on Houston's playoff roster and scored twice during their championship run.

Maybin played for the Marlins from 2008-2010, but was never able to perform at an expected level. The former top prospect had a disappointing .323 on-base percentage with the Marlins and that hindered his ability to steal bases. After leaving Florida, Maybin found some success with the San Diego Padres.

The Marlins have been linked to a number of veteran outfielders in recent weeks, after trading away Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich. Miami was rumored to be looking for a one-year deal with any candidate, but others may have not been as open to that idea. For Maybin, this is an opportunity to resurrect his career and build value for next season.

If Maybin succeeds with the Marlins, he will become a trade candidate in July. Miami is not expected to compete in 2018, but it can continue to improve the minor league system along the way. Maybin could be joined by other short-term signings in the coming days.

Where Maybin will hit in Miami's lineup remains to be seen, but his speed could put him atop the order. The Marlins will likely try to limit the service time of their young players. Even though Maybin is unlikely to be a part of Miami's long-term future, he could help the franchise out for years to come in other ways. Keeping a player such as Magneuris Sierra in AAA to begin the season, should give the Marlins an extra year of contractual control down the line.

Miami will begin the Grapefruit League season on Friday with a game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
