Marlins Split Pair of Games

The Marlins had a split-squad on Sunday and came out of the action with a 1-1 record

The Miami Marlins played two games on Sunday and ended up with a 7-5 win and a 10-4 loss.

In Port St. Lucie, the Marlins topped the New York Mets easily. While in Jupiter, the other half of Miami's team had trouble with the Washington Nationals. This was the first of two split-squad scenarios for the Marlins in the spring. The next and last split-squad will come on March 28th.

Matt den Dekker clubbed two home runs in the win over the Mets. The outfielder who has played for New York previously, now has four home runs in the spring. While Miami may not have a roster spot available for den Dekker, he has put himself into the conversation.

Brandon Barnes also homered in the game, but he has a much more difficult path to a roster spot. One of Barnes' main competitors for a roster spot is den Dekker, and he is vastly behind in terms of spring stats. Barnes will likely be on his way to AAA New Orleans to begin the season.

Jose Urena was the starter in the game with New York, and he went 4.1 scoreless innings. Urena walked four in his time on the mound, but this was still one of his strongest outings in the spring thus far.

In the loss to Washington, Adam Conley started and lasted only 2.2 innings. Conley allowed seven runs on five hits, and now has a 13.50 E.R.A this spring. The lefty is locked into a rotation spot to begin the season, but Miami will need better from Conley when the games start to count.

Destin Hood had the best day for the lineup in Jupiter with three hits, including two doubles. Hood also had two runs batted in, while Ryan Jackson added the other RBI.

The Marlins will travel on Monday to take on the Atlanta Braves at 1:05 p.m.
