Marlins Trade Dan Haren to Cubs

The Marlins traded Dan Haren to the Chicago Cubs on Friday as the trade deadline neared

The Miami Marlins sent veteran Dan Haren to the Chicago Cubs for a pair of minor leaguers on Friday.

Haren was seen as a likely candidate to be dealt before Friday's trade deadline due to his impending free-agent status. The right-hander has enjoyed a fine season with a 3.42 E.R.A and was eyed by several contenders according to reports.

Before the season began, Haren was acquired in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. As part of that deal, the Dodgers sent $10 million to cover Haren's salary. It is unknown if Miami is sending any cash along with Haren.

Coming back to Miami in this deal will be shortstop Elliott Soto and pitcher Ivan Pineyro. This continues a week which has shown that Miami is committed to rebuilding its depleted farm system. After a flurry of moves last off-season, the Marlins were left with a lack of depth in the organization.

While the prospects acquired thus far in deals have not been considered upper tier talent, they are young and could eventually contribute at the big-league level. The minor leaguers could also end up being trade chips in future deals.

The Marlins could make additional trades prior to the deadline. Some names that have been mentioned in recent rumors are Carter Capps and Marcell Ozuna. The Marlins are not expected to move either player unless significant talent was coming back. Both Ozuna and Capps have minimal salaries and controllable contracts.

Miami will take on the San Diego Padres on Friday evening at Marlins Park.
