Marlins Sign Edinson Volquez

The Marlins are signed free agent starting pitcher Edinson Volquez to a two-year deal

The Miami Marlins signed free agent starting pitcher Edinson Volquez to a two-year contract on Thursday.

The deal will be worth $22 million over the two years and will fill a big hole in Miami's rotation. The Marlins entered the off-season with multiple needs and Volquez should be just the start of things for the front office.

When Jose Fernandez passed away in September, Miami was immediately left with a need for starting pitching. Even before Fernandez's untimely passing, the Marlins needed help in the rotation. While no pitcher can easily replace Fernandez's talent or personality, Volquez will give the Marlins a veteran experienced arm.

In his 12 years as a big leaguer, Volquez has amassed an 89-79 record to go along with a 4.44 E.R.A. The right-hander has been well traveled with stops in Texas, Cincinnati, San Diego, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Kansas City. The last two seasons Volquez has pitched for the Royals and was a key member of the 2015 World Series champions.

Volquez figures to slide into the third spot in the Miami rotation behind Adam Conley and Wei-Yin Chen. Tom Koehler is also expected to open the season in the rotation for the Marlins. The fifth spot remains a mystery at this time.
