Martin Luther King III Speaks in Miami Beach: ‘We Still Have a Long Way to Go'

Martin Luther King Jr.'s son delivered the keynote address at a luncheon in Miami Beach, discussing opportunities for the African-American community on his father's holiday.

Martin Luther King III was joined by Fernando Chavez, son of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez, at the National Trial Lawyers Summit at the Lowes Miami Beach.

King III discussed his father's legacy and noted there is no infrastructure to deal with poverty in communities of color.

"When we look at the issue of opportunity, we have made not progress," he said. "If we do not find ways to address these challenges around poverty, racism and violence, our society is going to continue to be a very difficult place."

Attorneys Mark O'Mara and Benjamin Crump were also in attendance, and the parents of Trayvon Martin, Tracy Martin and Sabrina Fulton, were also at the event.

King III spoke at length about race, police relations and the progress made by his father and up to now.

"We have to take a moment and say 'well, we can't celebrate yet,'" he said. "It does not mean we have not made progress, we have, but we still have a long way to go."
