Masked Man Robs Davie Pizza Hut at Gunpoint: Police

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a Davie Pizza Hut Monday.

The robbery happened at the restaurant at 11316 West State Road 84 just after 9 a.m.

Davie Police said the manager of the restaurant heard a noise in the back and encountered an armed man wearing a ski mask.

"He brandished a firearm, threatening the individual working here and demanded money. He fled the store with some money, we don't know how much at this point," said Capt. Dale Engle with Davie Police.

It appears the crook entered through the back door, maybe 10-feet from where Sandra Mitto at the neighboring dry cleaner was standing.

"Normally, I would see the guy coming in," Mitto said. She never saw the manager, because the gunman bound him in the back room with duct tape.

As investigators worked the scene, it was a familiar sight for Alex Lai. In nine years running a high-end bike shop, he has never had a problem, until recently. His shop has been hit three times in three months.

"They actually entered through the ceiling and the second time was through the wall," Lai explained.

The third time, the masked bike bandits punched the door. It spidered, then the suspects kicked it, and then entered the store. They stoke seven bikes, which was a $30,000 retail loss.

Because of this, Lai has made security changes, "We invested in almost $15,000 cameras, switched to a different alarm company and even put metal bars in the windows and doors."

It's unknown whether the Pizza Hut employee was injured in the latest incident.
