Hundreds of people got a rough start to the weekend after a three-alarm blaze gutted a three story apartment building in Lauderhill Friday.

Firefighters are still dousing the building with water from tall ladders to control fire spots, which first sprouted at 2 p.m. The smoke from the smoldering roof of the building could be seen for miles and drifted over cars during rush hour traffic on the Florida Turnpike.

Surprisingly, only one person was taken to the hospital from injuries related to the fire, but investigators said they plan on going through the building to make sure no one was trapped inside.

The survey should also help investigators figure out how the blaze got started. The entire roof on the building, located in the 1500 block of Northwest 43rd Avenue, is gone and fire reached virtually all of the 30 apartment units.

It took firefighters from three cities to contain the fire. The American Red Cross is currently trying to place some of the families.
