Mattia College in Miami Dealing With Financial Troubles

A South Florida college is on the verge of closing its doors due to financial hard times.

Mattia College is located at 13926 Southwest 47th Street in Miami.

A protest was held on the campus Friday evening. Teachers say they haven't been paid for a month and will not teach next week, if they don't get their money.

For students studying to work in the medical field, that means no classes, so there are some major concerns.

"We are on a tight rope. We don't know what's going on. Nobody's telling us the right answer. You go to the nursing department, you go to administration, and they tell you the same thing, 'We don't know what's going on,'" said Freddie Misanas, nursing student.

Vanessa Rodriguez, Chief Operating Officer of the college, sent the following statement regarding the situation:

"Mattia College is grateful for our students and employees' support during this difficult time. We sympathize and understand their frustrations, as they are simply expressing their concerns due to the fact that the institution has not received any federal funding for several months now. With everyone's best interests in mind, the institution has had to self-finance to ensure the integrity and continuity of their education. Our doors remain open as we continue to educate the community as we have for the past 22 years."
