Report: Mayor Asks Beckham's Group to Examine Other Stadium Sites

New location would involve filling in boat slip near AAA

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez may get a red card from David Beckham’s group after he informed them that they need to consider an alternative site to the planned stadium at PortMiami, according to the Miami Herald.

The Herald reported that Mayor Giminez instead proposed a different location that would be created by filing a large boat slip between Museum Park and the AmericanAirlines Arena. By filling in the slip, it would create enough land for the stadium, according to the Herald.

Several groups have come out against using the PortMiami site for a new stadium, most notably Royal Caribbean Cruises. Royal Caribbean would have been located next door to the planned PortMiami stadium.

Some Miami Beach residents have also voiced opposition out of fear of even heavier traffic delays along the MacArthur Causeway.

Beckham’s group said it would “examine the feasibility of filling the slip and building a stadium,” according to the Herald. Beckham has promised to build the new stadium with private funds, and also won a state subsidy in the legislative session that ended last Friday.

According to the Herald, the PortMiami site is still an option for the new stadium, but Gimenez’s move shifts the debate, at least temporarily, down the street.

Beckham’s group was given two weeks to look into the plan proposed by Gimenez.
