The Florida Department of Health Tuesday confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated adolescent in Indian River County. The child has recovered.
This brings the total cases of measles between Indian River and St. Lucie counties to four.
Just last week, officials confirmed that an unvaccinated 6-year-old in St. Lucie County has measles.
The Palm Beach Post reports the Florida Department of Health is working with the St. Lucie County School District to inform parents about the highly contagious disease. It can be spread to unvaccinated people through the air.
Symptoms of measles typically appear seven to 14 days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms include a blotchy rash, fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes and tiny white spots with bluish-white centers inside the mouth.
Doctors recommend that children get measles immunizations between 12 and 15 months and again at 4 to 6 years.
