Miami Shoppers Come Back for Returns, More Purchases on “Mega Monday”

On the day after, customers went back to South Florida stores to return gifts they didn’t quite love.

Christmas is over, but on the “mega” day after, the Miami crowds are far from done shopping.

On what some called “Mega Monday,” customers went back to South Florida stores to return gifts they didn’t quite love.

"My sister got me a beautiful purse but it was a little ‘blingy’ for me,” Nicole Vincent said.

Retailers are counting on those imperfect gifts to get you into their brick-and-mortar stores to return them – and be tempted by more.

"We expected it,” Dell kiosk sales clerk Robert Gonzalez said of Monday’s activity. “Everyone's either taking their stuff back for returns or actually going shopping."

Carolina Sanchez explained that she went to return a gift – “and I paid the difference because I wanted something a little more pricey than the gift was.”

There was a lot of browsing going on at Dolphin Mall, where people were trying on that pair of shades they didn’t get for Christmas, or treating themselves to a purchase or two after spending so much on friends and family.

Roberto Williams said he went to pre-Christmas sales for his kids – and returned Monday for a couple of suits for himself.

"The first time was the stuff I wanted to buy, surely, and now I say ‘Hey, if I can buy more things for a good price…’” he said.

He’s hardly alone: a Consumer Reports poll found that more than 80 percent of those who said they planned to shop in the days after Dec. 25 said the lure of post-holiday sales was the biggest reason to come out, not necessarily the returns.

Because inevitably there are gifts you get that you cannot cash in or exchange.

"I got a bag of beef jerky,” Kyle Vincent said.
