A Miami attorney and accountant who once chased the paper trail of companies involved in fraud and bankruptcy cases has pleaded guilty to his own fraud.

Lewis Freeman entered his plea in a Miami federal court this morning to a conspiracy charge connected to a $2.5 million embezzlement scheme.

Freeman, 60, a well-known South Florida businessman and UM grad, made his name as a forensic accountant, investigating companies involved in exactly the kind of wrongdoing he was involved in himself.

Prosecutors said Freeman stole from nearly 250 clients of his firm, Lewis B. Freeman & Partners, throughout the past 10 years.

Freeman wrote as much as $6 million in unauthorized checks to himself, and hid his theft with fake court filings. All but the $2.5 million was recovered.

His company has since been dissolved.

He was arrested last month and now faces a maximum 20-year prison sentence. His sentencing is scheduled for May 19.
