Footage showed officers surrounding the suspect in an SUV that crashed into an Office Depot

A suspect who was shot by a driver as he tried to steal an SUV died after a crash and tense police standoff in Miami Beach Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Miami Beach Police tweeted that several officers responded to the scene just west of Alton Road and 18th Street.

Footage showed officers with guns drawn surrounding a Mercedes SUV that had crashed into the side of the Office Depot at 1771 West Avenue.

Officials said there was a suspect inside the stolen vehicle. After a short time, officers approached the SUV and took the suspect out.

Rescue workers placed him in the back of an ambulance. Officials said he was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital, officials said.

Police said the suspect had been shot by the driver of the SUV, who was having it washed when the suspect jumped in and drove off. The suspect got a couple blocks away when he crashed into the building.

Officials said the driver of the SUV, identified as 48-year-old Stephen A. Lott, was questioned and later released. A photo obtained by NBC 6 showed the driver laying on the ground as officers responded to the scene.

Police said they have been in contact with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office to determine if any charges may be filed.
