Miami Beach Votes to Close Sand Access Earlier

Miami Beach commissioners voted unanimously on Wednesday to close the city’s sandy white beaches two hours earlier.

Beachgoers will soon be barred from the sand on Miami Beach after 10 p.m., rather than at midnight, and will reopen to visitors at 5 a.m.

Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez says that the new curfew will reduce late night crimes on the beach that target tourists and residents. The curfew will also help protect beach wildlife from harm.

A 300-pound endangered sea turtle was mowed down on the shore of Miami Beach by an ATV in the middle of the night on Miami Beach in June.

The new beach curfew will go into effect next Oct. 28.
