Driver Who Struck Miami Bicycle Cops Failed To Stop as Instructed: MPD

Three Miami bike cops are undergoing tests for non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by an SUV during a training exercise

A driver who struck three Miami bicycle cops Thursday morning failed to stop at an intersection as instructed by a marked police vehicle, Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Reyes said.

The officers, who were participating in a training exercise, remain hospitalized Thursday afternoon with non-life-threatening injuries.

MPD veterans Renee Beaudry, 44, Richard Diaz, 41, and Miguel Mercado, 47 were hit about 10:45 a.m. as they crossed the intersection of U.S. 1 and Southwest 27th Avenue in a pack of cyclists.

Reyes said that a marked City of Miami Police vehicle with its lights flashing and siren playing entered the intersection before the officers in an effort to stop traffic as the group pedaled through.

However, a Honda CRV driven by 56-year-old Teresa Quintanilla did not stop as it traveled northbound on U.S.1, plowing into the three officers.

"The lady went around the police car and hit them," said interim Miami Police chief Manuel Orosa.

Mayor Tomas Regalado said Beaudry was hit first, suffering broken bones. Earlier, an official confirmed she suffered a leg injury that may require surgery.

Another officer was observed walking into the hospital, but all three are still undergoing tests to determine the extent of their injuries.

"The more serious injuries are the ones we're concerned with," said Iggy Carroll, Jr. of Miami Fire Rescue. "First is the impact with the car, and then is the impact with the ground."

Quintanilla remained at the scene of the crash, police said. Reyes confirmed that no charges have been filed as the investigation is not yet complete.
