Miami Billionaire Launches Non-Profit Group to Help Undocumented Immigrants With Legal Battles

A Miami billionaire is ready to put his money where his heart is, to fight the Trump Administration's tough deportation policy.

Mike Fernandez, a healthcare mogul who founded the equity group MBF Healthcare Partners who is also a political mega donor from Coral Gables, created a nonprofit organization that will raise money to defend in court unauthorized immigrants who are non-felons.

It’s a cause close to his heart, having come from Cuba to live the American dream

“Coming across the border illegally, without a single document, is not a felony. It’s a civil violation,” Fernandez said during an interview with NBC 6 anchor Jackie Nespral. “Coming across the border is no different than getting a parking ticket. Why are we treating them like criminals?”

Fernandez has been one of the largest donors to the Republican Party in South Florida, but has been an outspoken critic of the President – even endorsing Democrat Hillary Clinton in last year’s election.

“Why is that immigration officials have to go pick up someone who is a real criminal, they don’t find him – but they find maybe his mother and a cousin and they take them in only because they are undocumented."

You can watch that entire interview with Fernandez on NBC 6 Impact airing this Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
