Miami-Dade Approves Deal to Bring Free WiFi Throughout County, Public Transportation

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and county commissioners gave the greenlight on a project that will make Miami the "nation's first fully integrated smart city."

The county approved the installation of 300 free wifi kiosks throughout the city, including at Miami International Airport and PortMiami.

The project, in partnership with CIVIQ Smartscapes, also calls for over 1,000 wifi devices to be installed in all public transportation vehicles and at all Metrobus, Metrorail and Metromover stations.

"Great connectivity in the transit system means increased efficiency, less downtime, and overall better experiences for our passengers," said Miami-Dade Director of Transportation & Public Works Alice N. Bravo, in a press release.

CIVIQ will jumpstart the project with $20 million in up-front costs and will generate revenue off digital ads placed on kiosks throughout the county.

The first phase of the project is set to roll out over the next three months.
