Hialeah Woman Arrested for Absentee-Ballot Fraud
A week after the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office confirmed it was investigating allegations of absentee-ballot fraud, a Hialeah woman has been arrested for violation of a county ordinance that prohibits having more than two ballots. Deisy Penton de Cabrera, 56, was arrested Thursday on two counts of violating the ordinance and one count of absentee-ballot fraud, a third degree felony, according to an arrest warrant.
While the investigation on absentee ballot fraud continues in Miami-Dade, more losing candidates are demanding re-counts and one Dade County commissioner wants to change the rules on voting absentee.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. gave the State Attorney’s Office a witness statement Thursday as it investigates his ex-employee’s alleged absentee ballot fraud.
Bovo walked into the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office at about 1:30 p.m. and was there for several hours.
He said he volunteered to go talk with authorities, and emphasized that he was not asked to go there.
As a result, prosecutors formed a task force to look into absentee ballot voter fraud.
Bovo said that he gave “a sworn statement about the investigation concerning an ex-employee of my office allegedly conducting prohibited campaign activities.”
“As I have consistently stated, neither I nor any other member of my office had any prior knowledge of what this ex-employee may have been doing in reference to participating in any election activity,” the commissioner said in a statement. “I have never been the target of this investigation and I have cooperated fully with the State Attorney’s Office and provided them all relevant information.”
After leaving the State Attorney’s Office Bovo went to County Hall, where a budget meeting was taking place.
