Miami-Dade Cop's Patrol Car Shot

A Miami-Dade Police officer woke up Thursday to find her marked patrol car had been shot at multiple times as it sat in front of her home.

The 19-year police veteran said she heard the gunfire overnight and called it in. Officers responded to the area in Southwest Miami-Dade County but were unable to find anyone. NBC 6 spoke to the officer involved but isn’t naming her or showing her face.

“They patrolled the area looking for anything suspicious, but under the cloak of darkness you can’t see much and they missed it,” the officer whose car was shot at told NBC 6. “We didn’t find it until this morning.”

The marked patrol car had multiple bullet holes in it and the back window was shot out. The officer said she doesn’t believe she was the target; instead, the marked car was targeted. Residents were outraged over the incident.

“Respect the uniform, the job, everything about the lady and you come in here and shoot? We don’t like that,” said resident Clifford McCray.

The officer said she’s getting a lot of support from her family and is getting calls from coworkers as well. She said all of that is helping her cope with the shooting. Still, she has a message for the individual or people who shot up the car.

“We have families that we are concerned about that we take care of and we’re trying to serve and protect the community,” the officer said. “Please respect that, continue to respect that if possible.”

Miami-Dade Police are investigating the shooting as vandalism, but haven’t said if any suspects have been identified. If you have any information about the shooting, call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
