Miami-Dade County Schools Exceed State Percentages In Latest Grades Given

What to Know

  • Miami-Dade County Public Schools had a higher average percentage of "A" and "B" schools than the rest of the state in the latest grades.

Schools across the state of Florida found out where they ranked Friday as grades were issued from the Department of Education.

In Miami-Dade County, schools across each level exceeded that state averages when it came to “A” and “B” grades given. 30 percent of all MDCPS received an “A” grade from the state, higher than the state average of 23 percent.

Additionally, elementary schools (25 percent) and middle schools (27 percent) ranked higher than the state average of 21 and 25 percent, respectively.

"Let's be mindful of the fact that these results reflect a much more complex body of work, much tougher standards, and the continuation of a much more complex, more difficult number of assessments," Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said.

Miami-Dade officials are also bragging about having a lower percentage of “F” schools than the state, while six schools went up at least two letter grades from last year. Five schools went from “F” to “C” while one, Shadowland Elementary, went from a "F" to a "B."

"We were extremely elated to have moved from an 'F' to a 'B', it took a lot of hard work, and one of the key factors that helped us was the ongoing progress monitoring of our school," Shadowland principal Gwen Haines said.
