Miami-Dade County Sues Former, Current Miami Marlins Owners Over Equity Payments

The Miami-Dade County Attorney's Office has filed a lawsuit against the current and former owners of the Miami Marlins, including Derek Jeter and Jeffrey Loria, respectively, for allegedly refusing to make equity payments.

Mike Hernández, communications director for Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, said he confirmed the lawsuit against the Miami Marlins for "refusing to make 5 percent equity payment to the county."

Miami-Dade County said it sued the Marlins over what it calls the "false valuation" used to claim no money is owed to the government.

Records show the previous owners led by Loria made about $600 million in profits, but vague listings of loans and expenses make it impossible for the county to determine how much it is truly owed, according to the lawsuit.

"Mr. Loria did not meet the terms of the contract with Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami. He owes this community five percent of the profits from the $1.2 billion sale of the Miami Marlins. We will see Mr. Loria in court," Gimenez wrote on Twitter.
