Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Stresses Boating Safety on July 4th Weekend

This Fourth of July weekend Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is out on the water.

"You got hundreds of boaters out on the water and if you aren't sure how to maneuver a vessel or how to get around vessels, something is gonna go wrong," said Orestes Gonzalez, a captain with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The U.S Coast Guard and other agencies say alcohol, drugs and overcrowding don't mix.

"We have guys that come out, lack of experience, and they'll put too many people in one vessel. They'll drink all weekend and they're highly intoxicated. Boating under the influence is also illegal," Gonzalez said.

Boaters heading to Key Biscayne or downtown Miami for Monday's firework displays should be mindful of this weekend's regulated navigation areas.

The 15-knot speed limit is from 7 p.m. until midnight July 4th. The area includes Turkey Point north to the Julia Tuttle Causeway and Elliot Key west to the shoreline. Crews say navigating these waters is difficult, especially at night.
