Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez Critical of President Trump's Recent Comments on Charlottesville Violence

"There should be no ambiguity about what took place in Charlottesville,” Gimenez said

In the wake of President Trump’s latest comments regarding the violence this past weekend in Charlottesville, VA, one South Florida mayor is speaking out against the President.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said it was “very disappointing” to hear Trump reverse his comments from Monday, where he condemned hate groups such as the KKK and neo-Nazis by name.

"There should be no ambiguity about what took place in Charlottesville,” Gimenez said in a statement released Wednesday. “A young woman lost her life, several others were injured, and hatred and bigotry were on display.”

On Tuesday, the President got into a heated exchange with reporters at Trump Tower in New York City, going back to his weekend position of there being bad people on "both sides" of the weekend violence in which one person was killed.

“I urge President Trump to unequivocally condemn white supremacists and their actions, which serve to only divide and instill fear among Americans rather than promote love and understanding.”

Gimenez joined both U.S. Senators from Florida, Republican Marco Rubio and Democrat Bill Nelson, as well as members of South Florida’s Congressional delegation – including Reps. Illeana Ros-Lehtinen and Carlos Curbelo – in condemning Trump’s most recent comments.

The mayor’s response comes on the same day that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is scheduled to give a speech in Miami praising the county for cooperating with the administration’s mandate on turning over illegal immigrants who have been arrested.
