Miami-Dade Officials Endorse Waterfront Cuban Exile Museum

Commissioners in Miami-Dade County have endorsed giving waterfront county land to a Cuban exile museum.

The decision instructs Mayor Carlos Gimenez to begin negotiations with organizers pursuing the non-profit museum.

County officials voted in favor of the plan at a meeting Thursday.

The land known as Parcel B sits to the east of the county-owned AmericanAirlines Arena. How the site should be used has been the subject of debate for several years.

The Miami Herald reports that the discussion leading up to the decision highlighted the community's ethnic sensitivities.

African-American commissioners noted that when officials considered turning the land over to a Nigerian museum last year the plan had received more scrutiny. However, the vote did not fall along ethnic lines.
