Miami-Dade Police Officer, Civilian Injured in Crash

Witnesses said officer was chasing a car before collision

A police officer was injured in a crash in northwest Miami-Dade Tuesday morning after witnesses say the officer was involved in a chase.

The crash happened in the 1700 block of Northwest 87th Street around 10:20 a.m., officials said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said the crash involved three cars and said the officer and another person were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital both in serious but stable condition.

Witnesses said the officer was chasing a suspect just before the collision. The car he was chasing wasn't involved in the crash and fled the scene, the witnesses said.

"That was going at least 120 mph, it was going so fast you could feel the wind blow your car," witness Eric Readon said.

Police officials said the officer told dispatch that a car had refused to stop, but that was the last radio transmission with the officer.

"Then I saw the car coming fast toward me, I had to get over cause he ran the stop sign and swayed so I was really concerned for my safety," witness Gigi Jolly said.

Footage showed the officer's patrol car badly damaged at the scene, with another damaged car nearby.

"Two men in the garbage truck jumped out as well as others to pull the police officer out of his car and bring him to safety, then other officers came and put him in the back of a police car and he was bleeding in the back and front of his head," Readon said.

Officials said the officer has been with the department for one year. The incident remains under investigation.
