    Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho was named National Superintendent of the Year Thursday at a conference in Nashville, Tenn.

    Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho was honored by President Barack Obama Thursday at a ceremony at the White House.

    Carvalho, who was named National Superintendent of the Year in February, was honored alongside the National Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year winners.

    Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho could be walking through a boutique, but the brand-new establishment, called the Up-Start store, is reserved for an exclusive clientele. NBC 6's Ari Odzer reports.

    Candidates for the national title were measured on their leadership for learning, communication, professionalism, and community involvement.

    Carvalho had also been named Florida’s Superintendent of the Year in December.
