Miami Dolphins Defensive End Derrick Shelby Arrested at Nightclub

Authorities say Miami Dolphins defensive end Derrick Shelby is free on bond after being arrested on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and trespassing at a Fort Lauderdale nightclub.

Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman DeAnna Greenlaw says the 25-year-old player was arrested around 2 a.m. Saturday at Off the Hookah, which recently changed its name to CYN, after refusing to leave the establishment by security and police officers. Court records show he has since been released from jail on a $100 bond.

Attorney Daniel Rosenberg, representing Shelby, said by phone that his client maintains his innocence and plans to plead not guilty.

The Dolphins on Monday suspended Shelby indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.

"We were disappointed to learn about Derrick’s arrest. Everyone in this organization is held to high standards of conduct and professionalism. Based on my conversations with Derrick and the information we have thus far, Derrick will be placed on Indefinite Club Suspension," Head Coach Joe Philbin said in a statement. "When we have completed all of the necessary diligence, we will make a final determination on his discipline."

According to a Fort Lauderdale Police arrest report, Shelby had been removed from the club by security after a "disturbance" but was blocking the exit when an officer arrived.

Shelby refused to leave and "took an aggressive fighting stance," the report said. He was taken into custody after a struggle during which he was shot with a stun gun three times, the report said.

An undrafted pickup for the Dolphins in 2012, Shelby has appeared in all four of Miami's games this season, recording six tackles, two sacks and recovering a fumble. The Dolphins had a bye Sunday and weren't in action.

Shelby's teammate, Jared Odrick, said he spoke to Shelby and agrees with the team's suspension.

"I understand. I totally understand. I understand why it happened," Odrick said. "I want to make sure everything is cleared that needs to be cleared."
