Miami Heat Helping Burglarized Veteran's Center in Opa-locka

The Miami Heat is stepping up to help an Opa-locka veteran's center that was burglarized earlier this week.

The team delivered food and appliances to the Make A Wish Veterans Friday morning to help re-stock the shelves.

A thief made off with food, computers, TVs and paperwork Wednesday morning at the organization, which operates out of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post near 151st Street and Northwest 22nd Avenue.

The group serves food to vets every Friday but relies on donations to keep going. Thanks to the Heat they were able to feed the vets this week.

"I'm very thankful for what they're doing for me," founder Melinda Buford said.

The organization has been serving veterans for the past 15 years.

"As soon as we heard the word veterans and they were in need, we jumped into action," said Michael McCullough, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for the Heat.

The team plans to come back and fix everything that was damaged and replace all of the stolen electronics.

"Make a Wish has helped a lot of veterans," said Walter Eugene Poole, who stops by every week for food. "Whoever came in her and did this, they should be thinking about what it did to the veterans, how it makes us feel."
