Miami Herald Endorses Patrick Murphy in U.S. Senate Race Over Marco Rubio

After supporting him for much of his career in politics, one South Florida newspaper is turning away from U.S. Senator Marco Rubio.

The Miami Herald, in its list of endorsements for the upcoming elections, announced it would support Rubio’s challenger, Democratic Party nominee Patrick Murphy.

The newspaper cited Rubio’s decision to run for re-election after initially saying he would not while running for the Republican Party’s Presidential nomination – while saying Rubio’s continued support for the party’s nominee, Donald Trump, is another reason to pull support.

“Mr. Trump’s candidacy is a test of character, and Sen. Rubio is failing that test. How can voters believe he’s sincere when he says he does not share Mr. Trump’s awful views on Mexicans, immigrants, Muslims, women, etc., yet — at the same time — stands by his endorsement of the New York billionaire,” the paper wrote. “His act is unconvincing. It reeks of political convenience rather than political conviction.”

In recent days, Rubio has broken from the Trump campaign on several issues – disagreeing with the nominee that this year’s elections will be “rigged” while also encouraging fellow Republicans to not gloat over the continued release of emails by WikiLeaks from the Presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton

Murphy is in his second term as a member of the U.S. House, representing a district that includes much of the Treasure Coast and northern Palm Beach County. Most polls show Rubio with the lead, but the race tightening in recent weeks.

Rubio is holding an event in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, where he will be joined by U.S. Senator Corey Gardner, a Republican from Colorado.
