Woman Struck by Two Hit-and-Run Drivers in Miami

A South Florida family is holding out hope after a 62-year-old woman was struck by two hit-and-run drivers earlier this week in Miami.

Laurene Fermilien Jean was coming home from work at around 10:30 p.m Sunday when she was knocked down by a dark sedan at the intersection of NE Miami Avenue and 80th Terrace. A light-colored van then ran her over.

Both drivers fled the scene. Jean remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Jean's family were emotional Wednesday as they plead for the drivers to come forward.

"If you have any information about this, please come forward because it is devastating for us," said granddaughter Nettgy Jean Pierre.

They described Jean as a devoted mother and grandmother who moved to South Florida from Haiti two years ago. She works two jobs and was coming home late from work at the American Airlines Arena.

"Although she look old, she is very tough, and mind you, she has two jobs and always coming home late, and before she leave the house she always say a prayer," Pierre said.

Detectives have very limited information on the models of the cars that struck her, but witnesses say the second vehicle was possibly a 16-passenger van.

Anyone with information that would help police should call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
