Miami Mayor, Liberty City Business Owners Focus on Air Conditioning Thefts

Some businesses have been hit several times

Somebody is stealing central air conditioning units in Liberty City, and it’s getting the attention of Miami’s mayor.

On Wednesday, about 20 business owners met with Mayor Tomas Regalado to talk about the trend – and also to hear about the solution.

Miami Police will dedicate one officer to deal with the issue.

“We have to do more police presence, and we have to alert those who buy this copper that they shouldn’t do this – it’s just it creates more crime,” Regalado said.

Over the past few months, somebody has been stealing the units from small businesses in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood. Some businesses have been hit several times. At least one unit was lifted right off the roof of a building, merchants said.

Christine King’s office has been hit two times in one month.

“Not that we’re not satisfied with the police, but we feel that they can do more, because every time the businesses have replaced the AC units, the thieves come back,” she said.
