Miami Police Shoot Pit Bull While Responding to Shots Fired

Shots were fired in a Miami neighborhood on Thursday, and some of the bullets came from a police officer's gun.

It happened around 10 a.m. on Northwest 50th Street near 10th Avenue.

Neighbors watched as heavy artillery and armed officers approached a home. Miami Police responded to a call for shots fired.

With two men detained, it turned out the real threat wasn't people, it was dogs: three pit bulls. The chief of police said one of them charged at officers.

"They were responding at a high state alert to a shots fired call, and they were met with a number vicious dogs, three. And one of the dogs attacked the officers," said Chief Rodolfo Llanes.

Two officers opened fire, injuring the dog. The other two weren't shot, and were quickly removed from the property.

"It is a dangerous job and officers are trained to handle these situations and I think at this time they responded to their training," Chief Llanes said.

The chief promised a full investigation but said he believes the officers responded appropriately to their training, "We still have to investigate this because an officer discharged his firearm and that's very serious."

The initial call of shots fired remains under investigation.

In addition, having pit bulls in Miami-Dade County is illegal.
