Miami police officers say they hope you'll swap guns for gift certificates this Saturday.

It's a joint effort between Miami mayor Tomas Regalado, police Chief Manuel Orosa, local churches and businesses to buy back guns.

"No questions asked," explained police Sgt. Freddie Cruz. "Nobody's gonna conduct any investigations, ask you anything at all."

Speaking of the deadly school shootings in Newtown, Conn., Cruz emphasized "we've got to put an end to this. So our goal is to collect as many weapons as possible. Everything from a miniature Saturday night special to assault rifles."

The Newtown school shooting wasn’t far from the minds of some participants at a gun buyback event held in Opa-locka on Dec. 22. Organizers of the Opa-locka program called it a success last month, saying more than 100 weapons were collected.

In the upcoming Miami gun buyback, assault rifles are the prize that officers say they're really after.

Cruz said the weapons will be examined, and ultimately destroyed. The goal, he says, is to "make Miami a safer place for everyone."

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the next three Saturdays, Miami police will offer gift certificates in exchange for guns at the following places:

Saturday
Jordan Grove Baptist Church
5946 NW 12th Ave., Model City

Jan. 26
St. John Baptist Church
1328 NW 3rd Ave., Overtown

Feb. 2
San Juan Bosco Church
1301 W. Flagler St., Little Havana
