Miami Postal Worker Robbed at Gunpoint

A United States Postal Service carrier was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday inside the Alhambra Cove Apartments on NW 119th Street in Miami.

The crime was quick as two men, one of whom was armed, approached the letter carrier and demanded the keys to open mailboxes in apartment complexes. Postal workers say the robbers use the keys so they can intercept credit card applications, checks and in some cases actual credit cards.

“Their goal is to access mailboxes so they can do fraud, identity theft, fraud, and other things,” said postal inspector Blad Rojo. “It is a violent crime being followed up by a financial crime.”

The heist has become a common crime postal inspectors in South Florida are dealing with lately. In the past few years, postal key thefts have occurred in North Miami, Pembroke Park, Lauderhill and Coral Gables.

If you know anything about the robbery, contact the postal service or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477). Your tip could net you a reward of up to $50,000.
