Mirror Spoils Crook's Plan at Coral Gables Law Office

If you have any information on the burglary, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).

Police say a man who burglarized a Coral Gables law firm tried to hide his identity by moving around surveillance cameras on the wall, but the tactic didn't exactly work in his favor.

According to Coral Gables Police, the burglar went into the office building at 3211 Ponce De Leon Boulevard on Sept. 19 and repositioned the surveillance camera to try to conceal his identity.

Instead, the crook moved the camera lens towards the elevators where a large mirror was located, and the camera continued to capture the suspect’s actions.

“He opened the door,” said attorney Carlos Del Amo. “He did not pry it open. There was no destruction to my front door, so either he had a key or he knew how to jimmy the door.”

Police said the burglar went into the law firm’s suite and made it all the way to Del Amo’s office where he forced open his file cabinet. When he left, the crook walked out with roughly $3,700.

“Which is very strange because I don’t keep that amount of money in my office at any time, but that day I had a client come in and give me that,” Del Amo said. “While the money is important, okay, it’s not in comparison to feeling violated. This is a place where my door was never locked. None of the other offices were ever locked. Now, we’re locking all of our interior doors. It’s like you don’t feel safe in your own home.”

If you have any information regarding the identity of the burglar, call Coral Gables police at 305-442-1600 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
