Missing Fernandez Jersey Returned to High School

A high school jersey once worn by Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and stolen after his death was returned to the school Friday.

According to WFLA, the School District said a family saw a large envelope leaning up against the ticket booth at Alonso High School with the words “Jose’s jersey” written on it. The family brought the envelope in to the school Friday morning, and the jersey was inside.

“The entire Alonso High School family is grateful to have the jersey back and would like to thank the media and the outpouring of social media posts which shared this story,” Hillsborough School District officials said.

The jersey went missing after a vigil was held at the high school in Fernandez's honor on Wednesday night. The jersey had been hanging in the dugout during the ceremony. However, as the coach and school leaders cleaned up after the vigil, the jersey was gone.

The memorial was held days after Fernandez’s tragic death. He and two others men were killed as the boat they were in crashed into a jetty near Miami Beach early Sunday morning.

Fernandez attended Alonso High in Tampa in 2011.
