Missing Gulliver Schools Softball Coach Found Dead

Hector Torres had been last seen on Tuesday, police said

A Gulliver Schools softball coach who disappeared last week has been found dead.

Gulliver Prep held a moment of silence for Hector Torres Monday morning, hours after he was found dead.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic news that Hector Torres, beloved faculty member and one of our softball coaches, has passed away," head of schools Frank Steel said in a statement. "His contributions on and off the field have left a lasting impact on so many of us. On behalf of our entire Gulliver Community, we extend our most heartfelt condolences to Hector’s family and friends, and the many students, families, teachers, colleagues and alumni whose lives he touched."

Torres, 52, had been last seen at work on Tuesday, August 8th, and hadn't made contact with family or friends since, Miami-Dade Police said Sunday.

Police on Tuesday confirmed that Torres was found dead from suicide in the area of Southwest 152nd Street and Southwest 77th Avenue.

Torres worked for the school for more than 20 years and students who were in his study hall class said they were shocked to hear of his death.

"We were pretty close with him, we were totally shocked," student Naomi Von Gerlach said. "We saw the missing report, it's just so terrible."

"He was really nice, he was kind of quiet, you know, but every time like he'd see a student he'd wave at them, talk to them," student Isa Lamus said. "It's really weird that he's gone."
