A horse bought for the Sweetwater Police Department that went missing for months was discovered at a former city employee's home Thursday, officials said.
"Maverick" the horse had been purchased for the department's mounted patrol and had arrived in Miami in April but went unaccounted for, Sweetwater Police spokesman Jorge Fernandez de Lara said.
But based on a tip, investigators discovered the horse Thursday morning at the private home a former city employee, Fernandez de Lara said.
When the investigators arrived to confirm the horse's identity, the former employee willingly gave them the horse, Fernandez de Lara said.
The employee, who wasn't identified, hasn't been charged but the incident is still under investigation, Fernandez de Lara said.
Maverick was trailed to his new home and is expected to begin his first tour of duty. His trainer from Asbury University in Kentucky is coming to Sweetwater to help in his training.
The mounted unit is a new program that will patrol the Dolphin Mall and participate in community events.
