Mom of Abandoned Toddler Arrested

The mother a three-year-old who was found wandering alone in a Hialeah park Thursday, voluntarily came to the Hialeah Police headquarters.

Hialeah Police said the mother, Sara Montoya, 29, had deliberately left her toddler at home and then delayed coming back home after she learned police were looking into the incident.

The child was found by good Samaritans who called police after the boy was found in a park about a half-block from his apartment in the 1100 block of SE 9th Court.

“By all accounts, she’s an excellent mother,” Zogby said. “Why would she leave her child alone and not return.”

The biological father of the baby, Denis Gonzalez, 42, showed up at the Hialeah Police Department Thursday evening to answer questions about his son’s incident. Gonzalez has a lengthy criminal history from battery to domestic violence. There was also a restraining order against him by the boy’s mother.

“Aside from a past that is marred with problems, domestic problems, there was no reason for us to suspect that he may be involved with her disappearance,” said Zogby.

Police charged Montoya with one count of child neglect, a third-degree felony.
