More Manatees Seen in Broward County: Report

390 were counted this week, up from 161 two weeks ago

More than twice as many manatees were spotted in Broward County this week as were seen two weeks ago, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

An aerial survey counted 390 manatees this week. Most of them were seen in Florida Power & Light’s cooling lakes west of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the newspaper reported.

That figures compares to the 161 tabulated in the aerial survey two weeks ago.

The surveys are carried out as part of Broward County’s Manatee Protection Plan, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The county’s manatee coordinator, Pat Quinn, told the paper that he expects more manatees to head toward Broward due to the cold weather – and asked boaters to be extra cautious.
