While the blizzard that hit the northeast spared most of New York City and New Jersey, that didn’t stop thousands of flights from across the country to be canceled.
American Airlines, the largest carrier out of Miami International Airport, was prepared Tuesday for an onslaught of upset passengers. But, at some points in the day, there were more American Airlines agents ready to help than passengers needing assistance.
Still, Boston, New York, Newark, and Philadelphia were all closed for parts of the day. It left Fort Lauderdale International a parking lot for some airlines as they stationed planes at the airport until they could be brought back into service when the northeast opened its airports to normal traffic.
With a potentially historic snowstorm pounding much of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts; air travelers across the country, including South Florida, were scrambling to try to beat the expected flight delays and cancellations.
As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was reporting a total of 109 arrival cancellations and delays, along with 88 departure cancellations and delays. Miami International Airport reported 98 arrival cancellations and delays along with 91 departure cancellations and delays.
The majority of cancellations Tuesday came from JetBlue, United Airlines, U.S. Airways, Delta Airlines, and Southwest. American Airlines, with a hub in Miami, reported 278 flight cancellations and 69 flight delays.
Travelers are advised to check with their airline before heading to the airport, as many airlines are waiving the fee to change flights if necessary due to the storm.
