Mother, Protesters Demand Video Be Released in Miami Gardens Police-Involved Shooting

The family of a man killed in a police-involved shooting in Miami Gardens attended another city council meeting Wednesday to demand the release of a police video of the incident.

"I miss him, I miss him so much. I miss my baby," said Catherine Daniels, mother of Lavall Hall. "Why did they have to take my baby away from me, god have mercy."

Hall was shot and killed by police in February after Daniels called 911 for help with her son, who was schizophrenic. Police said the officer opened fire after Hall attacked two officers with a broomstick.

"I want answers, I want justice. Please put my mind in the mind I know my child was, not in the wrong," Daniels said. "You all took my child and I don't know no reason why, nothing at all."

Daniels is backed by the Dream Defenders, who pointed out at the city council meeting a state statute that allows only the parent to view or copy the video.

Mayor Oliver Gilbert acknowledged the law and said he'd be happy to show the mom the video if she requested it in writing. It's a reverse course from last month when he told the packed room the decision was entirely up to the state attorney.

"It's sad and tragic, they're going to do everything they're supposed to do, and the state attorney is going to make the decision," Gilbert said.

The family has already filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and police department.
