Mother of Miami Teen Hurt in Hit and Run Wants Driver to Come Forward

A Miami teenager is fighting for her life after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver over the weekend.

Dereka Banks, 18, remained at Jackson Memorial Hospital Monday as her family pleaded for the driver to turn themselves in.

"Why were you driving so fast and hit my daughter?" mother Veronica Banks said.

Banks said her daughter has a broken arm, broken leg, and more concerning swelling on the brain that doctors are trying to control.

"She was asleep, she can open her eyes but she has movements in her hand," Banks said.

The student was hit on Saturday evening around 7:30 p.m. when she was walking near Northwest 13th Avenue and 54th Street. The driver kept going.

"Anybody who knows anything about this situation please come forward," Banks said. "This is a mother who is grieving for her daughter. This is her baby daughter and I shouldn't be going through this by myself. I shouldn't be going through this. I know someone out there has seen what happened to her."

Relatives said Dereka is a high school junior who has already received a college scholarship.

"My daughter is a good student. I don't know why this is going on, I don't know why this happened to her. This shouldn't happen to no one," Veronica Banks said. "My daughter is going to come out of this, I know she will but I just want the one who did this to come forward."

Miami Police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
