Mother's 911 Call After Baby Taken by Car Thief Released

A recording of the 911 call made by a mother after her baby was taken during a carjacking in Pompano Beach was released Thursday.

It was 12 minutes of agony for the young mother distraught after seeing someone steal her car from the 7-Eleven on N. Dixie Highway Monday night with her 1-year-old baby in the backseat.

"Please! Somebody just stole my car with my baby in the car!" Pamela Goodwin tells the 911 operator in the call.

Goodwin said she walked away from her car for a moment and someone climbed into her white Toyota Camry and drove off.

In the 911 call, Goodwin is heard screaming as the operator tried to calm her down.

"Ma'am, calm down and listen to me, do you know any of your license?" the operator asks, as Goodwin continues to scream. "Ma'am, you need to calm down. What's your name? You need to calm down so I can help you please."

"How can I calm down, my baby is gone!" Goodwin replies.

The baby was found a mile away unharmed and in good condition a short time later. Goodwin said she's on anxiety medication, trying to deal with the backlash of judgment from social media.

"It's very stressful but it's a loving experience to have children, and yeah, you make mistakes, nobody is perfect," she told NBC 6. "But that doesn't mean my child should be taken away from me, or I should go to jail for a mistake, everyone makes mistakes."

It was a tough lesson Goodwin says she hopes no other parent has to learn the hard way.

"Even if it's just a second, take your kids with you," she said. "It's a lot to take them out and into the car, they're sleeping but the best thing to do is take them with you."

Authorities are still looking for the car thief. Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
