Mother's Public Plea After Son Killed in Wynwood

The family of a man who was shot and killed in the Wynwood area of Miami over the weekend is asking the public to help find his killer.

Thomas Quass, 41, was heading to his car with his girlfriend when he was shot early Saturday on Northwest 26th Street.

Police say this is a well lit area and its that has become a bustling spot for dinner and fun and that exactly what this couple has been doing.

"Unfortunately the shooter did not respect him and his girlfriend," mother Melisa Quass said Monday.

Thomas Quass, a swimming instructor, was killed for no reason, his mother said.

"I don't know why he did it, I wasn't there," Melisa Quass said. "If I was there I would probably be the one who took the bullet because I would, to see that somebody was going to hurt my son, I would step in."

Police said the gunman is a black male, about 5-foot-10, weighs 170 pounds, and was wearing a black and gray shirt, black pants, and black hat. He jumped into the passenger seat of a grey 2013-2015 two-door Hyundai Velostar.

The lighting, foot traffic, and police presence in Wynwood makes this murder highly unusual, officials said.

Melisa Quass said it could happen to anybody.

"If you see crime, tell the authorities because you are going to live in fear and pretty soon you are going to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," Melisa Quass said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
