A suspect in a Fort Lauderdale murder was killed during a police-involved shooting at a hotel in Oakland Park early Wednesday, authorities said.
The shooting happened just after midnight at the Days Inn at 1595 West Oakland Park Boulevard just off I-95.
Authorities said Fort Lauderdale Police, Broward Sheriff's deputies and U.S. Marshals went to arrest Henry Kiner, 27, allegedly repsonsible for the death of Corey Pratter, who was fatally shot Sunday morning in Fort Lauderdale.
"The suspect, when he came out, he opened fire on these law enforcement officers," BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said.
Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said this was ambush. The deputies and the marshals tailed Kiner's pickup truck to the hotel, and when the truck was leaving the hotel, they thought he was inisde. So they stopped it, and that's when Kiner fired two shots from the second floor balcony. Seven law enforcement officers fired back, fatally shooting him.
The seven officers are on the fugitive task force and are SWAT trained, Israel said.
A BSO deputy suffered an arm injury during the incident and was taken to a nearby hospital and later released.
A hotel guest, Daniel Foster, who wasn't related to the incident was also shot in the arm, but his injury was not life threatening, Coleman-Wright said.
One guest said she heard several shots ring out just after midnight.
"It sounded like a cannon and it wouldn’t stop,” Renee Jenkins said.
Jenkins was in her room with a 2-month-old infant and 1-year-old baby. She said she peeked her head out the window, saw the fire fight and looked for the safest place possible.
“Jumped in the tub because that’s the best place you can go," she said.
Authorities had closed streets in the area to traffic early Wednesday as they investigated the incident.
"This involves three different agencies, all of them working together, so obviously detectives are going to have to talk to everyone involved, we're gonna be out here for quite some time," Coleman-Wright said.
Investigators expect the east and west bound lanes of Oakland Park Boulevard west of I-95 at the CSX railroad tracks to Northwest 31st Avenue to be shut down until noon, Coleman-Wright said.
