New Fresco Y Mas Stores Opening Across South Florida

A well-known supermarket chain is set to reopen several stores with a Hispanic flair.

Only NBC 6 cameras were allowed in to see the transformation. Winn-Dixie’s parent company, Southeastern Grocers, decided to change the grocery store into supermarkets that cater to the large Hispanic population that calls south Florida home.

The 'Winn-Dixie' sign came down and the 'Fresco y Mas' sign went up at a supermarket on southwest 8th Street and 67th Avenue. The shelves are stocked with products like traditional Hispanic cakes called tres leches, root vegetables, malta drinks and even those typical Cuban pork roasters.

In June, Fresco y Mas opened up its first store in Hialeah. Though the company won’t reveal numbers, it says sales surpassed expectations so officials decided to open up five more stores; four in Miami-Dade and one in Palm Beach.

The stores have Hispanic cafeterias, a more traditional butcher shops as well as products that have been sourced locally, giving the community an extra boost.

The chain will compete with supermarkets like Sedanos and Publix Sabor and even go after dollar stores with a dollar-zone aisle stocked with products Hispanic families look for on a daily basis.

The stores officially open Wednesday at 9 a.m.
