New Leader at U.S. Special Operations Command

Votel will assume leadership of Special Operations Command from Navy Adm. William McRaven. Special Operations Command is located at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.

Army Gen. Joseph Votel will assume leadership of the U.S. Special Operations Command in Tampa, replacing the man widely credited with planning the mission that killed Osama bin Laden.

Votel will assume leadership of Special Operations Command from Navy Adm. William McRaven. Special Operations Command is located at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.

According to a news release, Votel will assume the command during a ceremony Aug. 28 at the Tampa Convention Center.

McRaven has commanded the Special Operations Command since August 2011 and will retire from active duty after 37 years of service to the nation.

Votel is currently commander of the Joint Special Operations Command in Fort Bragg, N.C.
