New Taxicab App Launches in South Florida

Taxicab drivers in South Florida are looking to add a competitive edge to their business with the help of a new cellphone app.

The makers of the app said it offers a safer and more convenient ride around town.

"The better way to taxi," that's the ZabCab promise. The new taxi app launched Monday in Fort Lauderdale and Miami, but Mayor Carlos Gimenez knows many travelers already take advantage of popular rideshare apps like Uber.

"I've said all along that Uber and Lyft are not regulated here. They're not supposed to be working here, but they are," Gimenez said.

Gimenez said it's time for the taxicab industry to step up its game. ZabCab said its mobile and desktop app does exactly that.

The company said it can compete with popular rideshare apps because its service provides licensed taxi drivers, cash or credit payment options without having to enter your credit card information, and a no surge pricing policy during peak times.

The app will continue to develop new features, while also improving on existing ones like the "lost and found option."

"Now you just open your app, you press 'last driver' and it connects instantly to the driver and you can say, 'Hey, come back,'" a company representative explained.

With the high demand for safe and quick transportation throughout Miami-Dade, many hope this app will improve drive times and give tourists and residents more options.
